How has your career and life changed since receiving the Global Talent visa?

I’m still working at Meta, focusing on Privacy infrastructure. Meta’s scale, managing enormous volumes of personal data from billions of people globally, presents complex challenges that require innovative, large-scale solutions. In this role, I’m contributing to the advancement of data understanding technologies, which is crucial for enhancing privacy protections. 2023 was a significant year for me – I received the Global Talent visa, secured ILR, and now I’m in the process of applying for UK citizenship.

How did your career develop by the time you considered applying for the Global Talent visa? What companies did you work for?

Before joining Meta, I worked at Amazon, Deutsche Bank, Trivago, and NetCracker. I moved to London at the end of 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic, to work at Facebook. Prior to Facebook, I worked at Amazon, focusing on localizing the catalog for different countries, including the UK, France, Germany, and Japan. I also contributed to the launch of Amazon in Turkey and the Netherlands. Facebook sponsored me for a Skilled Worker visa, and until 2022, I didn’t think much about the Global Talent visa and knew little about it - it seemed like something only given for "outstanding achievements."

What attracted you to this visa, and why did you ultimately choose it?

The Global Talent visa gives you the freedom of not being tied to one employer. If you lose your job (which, with all the tech layoffs happening, is a real concern), a Skilled Worker visa only gives you a couple of months to find something new before you have to leave the country. There used to be a 12-month cooldown period, where you couldn’t apply for a new visa or return for a year. Luckily, they’ve scrapped that rule. Plus, the GTV shortens the time it takes to get to ILR from 5 years to 3, and citizenship from 6 years to 5.

Why did you decide to seek help with your application?

In 2022, I wanted to secure my stay in the UK without being dependent on an employer. I wasn’t sure if I had enough grounds for the Global Talent visa, as my publications and conference experience were older and more academic than strictly technical.I came across Immigram, had a consultation, and they reassured me that I had a good chance. They also helped me improve my public profile and personal brand, which turned out to be crucial for the visa application.

How did the process of preparing your case go? Was there anything that surprised you?

Working at companies like Amazon or Meta often means limited access to conferences because a lot of the work is under NDA. Immigram helped me build my public profile by organizing webinars and writing articles on technical topics that weren’t directly related to my job. They also helped with editing recommendation letters and framing my achievements in the right way to meet the Global Talent visa requirements.

What would you advise specialists who want to apply for the UK Global Talent visa?

It’s not as difficult or "impossible" as it might seem at first. You don’t need big-name awards or titles. A lack of conferences or publications can be easily compensated, and companies like Immigram can really help with that.
